DEPED: CLASSROOM CONSTRUCTION STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND EARTHQUAKES, TYPHOONS

Department of Education (DepEd) pushed through with ‘Brigada Eskwela’ aiming to strengthen classroom structure in times of calamities.

In an interview with ABS-CBN Early Edition, DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali discussed DepEd’s plan to improve school facilities’ resiliency to natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons.

“The preparedness of our classroom ay dapat sila ay resilient in times of disaster,” Asec. Umali explained.

He said that because schools are used as evacuation center, it should be firm enough to survive through a magnitude nine earthquake and a super typhoon.

DepEd Asec. Umali said that with the help of ‘Brigada Eskwela’, they can reconstruct and reinforce buildings and classrooms.

He added that these facilities are made only as a last resort for evacuation when faced with disasters and when there is nowhere else the people can evacuate.

“We expect all our partners and stakeholders to band together para mabuhay uli ang sinasabi mong bayanihan,” he expressed.

Parents, students, teachers, private sectors, and other organizations came to help in the reconstruction of classrooms, cleaning, painting walls and chairs.
